CONDUCTOR
As a conductor and choir director, Daniel Barke is now regarded as one of the most distinguished figures in his field in Europe. Certified in classical conducting at the age of 19, he specializes today in jazz, pop, and contemporary music. With more than two decades of professional experience, his career has led him to renowned institutions, where he has worked as a conductor and artistic director. Together with his ensembles, Barke has received multiple international awards and has served as a musical director at numerous theaters.
“Everything Daniel Barke touches is at least outstanding.”
Kristoffer Thorning
His conducting style is described as both precise and extroverted. A wide dynamic range and rhythmic accuracy are combined with a distinctive artistic interpretation of the works he engages with. Of particular importance are his own, award-winning vocal arrangements, which are a regular and integral part of his choral work, giving it a strong sense of authenticity.
This work is currently available only in German. An English-language edition is in development.
From the very first sentence, the author draws readers into a world in which choral singing is far more than intonation and cueing, using linguistic brilliance, literary force, and finely tuned humor. The prologue alone reads like a short novel about identity, loss, community, and the life-saving power of we – setting the emotional benchmark for everything that follows.
Structurally, the book impresses with a clever and compelling dramaturgy: from Mindset through Know-how and Skillz, it traces an arc from psychological depth work to practical ensemble and stage competence, culminating in concrete musical excellence. Throughout, pedagogical experience merges seamlessly with psychological insight and razor-sharp observation. Complex ideas are made tangible, humane, and often delightfully self-ironic – without ever sacrificing professional depth.
What ultimately makes this book a true one-of-a-kind on the vocal music market is its universal relevance: large portions of its content are of immense value to any active musician, regardless of genre, ensemble format, or level of experience. This book makes choirs better, ensembles braver, and people stronger. Required reading. Full stop.
